On this day:

Abe's Birthday

Abraham Lincoln's birthday was yesterday...it seemed like a good time for me to finally finish reading The Real Lincoln, by Thomas J. DiLorenzo. The book is harshly critical of Lincoln, calling him "The Great Centralizer," a man whose allegiance to the "Whig/Republican dream of a North American economic empire" led him to launch an invasion of the South that destroyed the constitutional doctrine of federalism and resulted in the barbaric subjugation of those who stood in his way.

As would be expected, DiLorenzo's assessment of ol' Abe was met with a great deal of criticism. See here, here, and here. A few positive reviews are here, here, and here. The transcript of a debate between DiLorenzo and Harry V. Jaffa, one of his harshest critics, is here.
