On this day:

Sweet Home Alabama

Splenda, the world's leading sugar substitute, is made in McIntosh, Alabama. I didn't know that.

The sugar industry is suing Tate & Lyle, Splenda's manufacturer, for allegedly misleading consumers into thinking that it is a natural sweetener. According to the Mobile Register, a spokesman for the company counters that "We have never claimed that it is 'natural,' because it is the product of a chemical process. But there are sugar deliveries being made to McIntosh every week."

The Cato Institute's Doug Bandow has more on the lawsuit and the sugar industry's anti-competitive tactics here.
